Problem-solving is another of the most important tools in self-management and in life.  Learning problem-solving techniques is a must for everyone.  Problem-solving involves diagnosing the possible causes of a problem and developing an action plan that solves that problem. People use problem-solving skills all the time, both in their personal and professional lives.  Effective problem-solving in the workplace often requires following a step-by-step process.

Here are the 7 steps for an effective Problem-Solving Process:

  1. Identify the problem – This is the most difficult and most important step.
  2. List ideas to solve the problem
  3. Select one method to try.
  4. Assess the results
  5. Substitute another idea
  6. Utilize other resources
  7. Accept that the problem may not be solvable now

The next time a problem presents itself, pause for a minute, then use this opportunity to use the problem solving process.
